The down jacket is undeniably one of the most essential bits of kit in your arsenal of adventure-wear. Down insulated outerwear is no longer the sole reserve of high-altitude mountaineers thanks to design and tech developments over the years, and nowadays there’s a down jacket on the market to suit just about every activity.

After a long old winter of wear however, you might be finding your feather-filled best friend is looking (and smelling) a little worse for wear. These puffy purveyors of warmth don’t come cheap, so you want to be sure you get it right when it comes to cleaning. So, how do you wash a down jacket at home without ruining it?

In our latest video, seasoned adventurer Danny Etheridge talks us through his step-by-step method for safely and effectively cleaning a down jacket by hand and at home. You can watch the video below, and head over to the BASE YouTube channel and hit subscribe for more tips and tricks from our team of outdoor and adventure experts.

Spoiler alert: You won’t be needing those tennis balls.
