WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR

In a waterproof jacket, especially for higher intensity activities like trail running or fast hiking, I prioritize minimal weight and bulk without compromising on protection from the elements. Breathability is an absolute must, and the jacket should pack down small to fit into a vest or small pack. Durability is definitely a consideration, but I’m willing to trade some robustness for weight savings.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Rab Phantom Waterproof Jacket immediately impresses with its astonishingly low weight—just 116g for a men’s medium. Constructed from 7D Pertex Shield 2.5-layer fabric, it feels almost insubstantial in hand, yet promises a hydrostatic head of 20,000mm and breathability of 20,000g/m²/24h . Whut? The design is stripped back: no pockets, minimal seams, and a slim-ish fit.

The hood is also simples, with an elasticated opening and a small peak. It rolls away neatly, allowing the jacket to pack into its own hood, forming a compact bundle that’s easy to stow . The cuffs and hem are partially elasticated, ensuring a snug fit without the need for additional adjustments.

THE TEST

I tested the Phantom during several spring trail runs in the Lakes, encountering everything from light drizzles to sustained downpours. In light rain, the jacket performed admirably, shedding water effectively and keeping me 100% dry on the inside. During heavier rain, after about an hour, I did notice some dampness seeping through the front zip area.

Breathability was impressive; even during intense uphill efforts, I didn’t experience the clamminess you can get with shells. The fit and stretch in the fabric allowed for decent movement, and the jacket didn’t ride up or flap excessively.

The ultra-thin fabric does raise concerns about realistic durability.

WHO IS THIS ITEM FOR?

The Rab Phantom Waterproof Jacket is ideal for trail runners, fastpackers, and minimalist hikers who need a lightweight, packable shell for emergency weather protection. It’s perfect for situations where every gram counts, and the jacket is more likely to spend time in your pack than on your body. However, if you’re seeking a durable, all-day waterproof for heavy rain and rugged conditions, you might want to consider a more robust option.

WHAT STANDS OUT?

ULTRA-LIGHTWEIGHT – At just 116g, it’s one of the lightest waterproof jackets available

PACKABILITY – Packs into its own hood, forming a compact bundle that’s easy to stow.

BREATHABILITY – Performs well during high-intensity activities, preventing overheating.

MINIMALIST DESIGN – Stripped-back features reduce weight and potential points of failure.

VALUE FOR MONEY

Priced at £175, the Rab Phantom offers good value for those seeking an ultra-lightweight, packable waterproof shell. While it may not be the most durable option for prolonged use in harsh conditions, its performance in fast-and-light scenarios makes it a worthwhile investment.

BASE BOTTOM LINE

A more than solid choice for weight-conscious adventurers needing reliable, packable weather protection, with minor compromises in durability and long-term waterproofing under sustained heavy rain.
