Our Verdict

The Solo is a smart bit of kit: for a lot of real-world winter work alpine walks, cold ridge days, high-altitude transitions, it’s hard to fault.

RRP £164.95
Weight 680 g
Features 133 g PrimaLoft Gold in body, 100 g in sleeves; Flylite Ultra/Cordura shell; water‐resist / windproof face; fixed hood; storm flap; multiple pockets

Pros

  • Excellent warmth for weight and layered use
  • Fairly capable against wind and light moisture
  • Balanced, versatile design (mid or outer)
  • Thoughtful features (storm flaps, good pocket layout)

Cons

  • Bulk and pack size higher than ultralights
  • Insulation in sleeves is lighter, some thermal mismatch

WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR

Well, the basics, really. I want it to actually feel warm in damp cold, manage internal moisture when I’m active, resist wind enough to make it viable in transition, and ideally survive catches and scratches and repeated compressing/unpacking.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Peeling it from the packaging, the Solo feels solid. That 133 g PrimaLoft Gold in the body gives structure without stiffness, and the outer Flylite/Cordura face isn’t overly fragile. The cut is “regular” not race-fit, but not billowy either which gives flexibility for layers.

THE TEST

Over a few weeks I threw the Solo into mixed conditions: biting wind, light rain, exposed ridgelines, colder descents, uphill pushes.

WHO IS THIS ITEM FOR?

The Solo is for people who want a dependable “plug-and-play” warmth layer that can double as an outer when conditions are fair. Alpine walkers, winter scramblers, cold-weather hikers who carry a shell for wet weather. If your objective is ultralight backpacking or you regularly face torrential rain, this is not your core shell, it’s a warm mid/outer hybrid.

WHAT STANDS OUT?

– Thermal efficiency: good warmth without feeling like a balloon
– Versatility: works as a layer or a standalone jacket
– Feature set: storm flaps, good pocket layout, hood adjustment
– Robust design: materials and hardware seem built to last

VALUE FOR MONEY

At £164.95, you’re entering a pretty competitive zone for synthetic-insulated jackets. But considering what you get: capable insulation, decent shell performance, solid materials and durability, it’s fairly priced. It doesn’t outclass top-level insulated shells from premium brands in extreme conditions, but as a practical, multi-use piece, it delivers solid bang for the buck.

BASE BOTTOM LINE

The Keela Men’s Solo Jacket is not a lightweight miracle machine, but it’s a well-conceived, usable, and genuinely helpful winter workhorse. If your plan is to mix cold-weather performance with decent resistance to wind and light moisture, the Solo is a worthy companion.
