Our Verdict

If you’re after a no-nonsense hardshell that won’t make you flinch on scrappy ridgelines or get bogged down on long days, the Cairn is a compelling choice. It leans a little toward “sturdy utility” rather than featherlight elegance, but that’s a trade many will happily accept.

RRP £179.95
Weight 340 g
Features 3-layer construction, taped seams, DWR outer face, helmet-compatible hood, pit zips, articulated sleeves, full-length front zip

Pros

  • Very reliable waterproof performance
  • Balanced, well-thought cut and mobility
  • Robust feature set (hood, pit zips, taped seams)
  • Solid DWR longevity

Cons

  • Bulk and pack size more than ultralight shells
  • Pockets could do better with bulkier items

WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR

In a shell like this, I expect it to keep me dry in real conditions, allow good wicking under exertion, not flap me to bits in wind, and survive a beating over months of use. I’ll tolerate a little weight penalty if the performance justifies it.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Keela makes apparel used by the military and emergency services so that should hint as to what to expect. Holding the Cairn out of the pack, you see immediately that fragile, it is not. The taped seams and hardware feel competent, not flashy. The hood is helmet-compatible (with wiring and a three-point adjust), the cuffs and hem have proper adjustment, and the zippers are substantial. Fit is athletic but pretty forgiving: you can layer underneath without it feeling like a straitjacket.

THE TEST

I put the Cairn through sessions across variable weather: drizzle, heavy rain, wind, steep ascents and descents, scrubby terrain, long exposure. Here’s how it fared:

Waterproofing

In moderate rain, it kept me dry all day, no question. The shell shed water beautifully, and the DWR held up well. In heavier, sustained downpours, after a few hours I noticed moisture creep at high–stress zones (e.g. lower hem, cuff edges) but nothing catastrophic.

Breathability and body heat

On uphill sections, with exertion, sweating, pack on, it managed ventilation decently. Pit zips were genuinely useful; opening them made a measurable difference in comfort.

Comfort & usability

Movement is good: the articulated sleeves, slightly contoured cut, and proper adjustment systems make it live well in motion.

WHO IS THIS ITEM FOR?

The Cairn is well suited to hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and general outdoors types who need a reliable, all-round shell. If you’re not chasing grams like an ultralight nut, but you also don’t want a heavy “coat,” this sits in that sweet middle zone.

WHAT STANDS OUT?

– Balanced design: it doesn’t lean too far into gimmicks or compromises
– Feature load without overkill
– Reliable waterproofing over rugged use
– Fit and mobility: it moves with you without fuss

VALUE FOR MONEY

At £179.95, the Cairn sits in a competitive bracket. It’s not cheap, but you’re not paying for fancy branding or gimmicks. You’re paying for performance and durability.

BASE BOTTOM LINE

The Keela Men’s Cairn Jacket is a dependable, no-fuss shell with genuine mountain chops. It doesn’t aspire to ultra-light fetishism, but it doesn’t feel like a dinosaur either. For those who want a jacket that will stand up to real conditions, move well, and last, this is a smart pick
