Recent years have seen more and more people heading outdoors in order to enjoy the mental and physical benefits that activity in nature can provide, and whilst it may seem that our open spaces are free for all to enjoy, the associated costs of essential kit are still prohibitive for many.

While training soldiers overseas, ex-British Army Office Bruce Leishman realised that many felt apprehensive about outdoor activities owing to a lack of experience or confidence in using the equipment and clothing required to participate fully and safely. This realisation inspired Bruce to found KitUp – a rental service and app that allows users to hire outdoor gear from other outdoor enthusiasts based on location and activity, reducing costs and emissions as well as improving accessibility.

Below, Bruce gives us an insight into the company’s humble beginnings, and how KitUp is on a mission to open up adventure to more people by improving accessibility and connecting communities.

The KitUp Vision

Imagine a world where everyone can enjoy the outdoors in the way they want to because access to equipment and outdoor education is universal. This is the vision that I am working towards with KitUp – a rental marketplace that allows anyone to access paddle boards, bikes, kayaks, outdoor clothing and much more, to and from anyone else. The overarching purpose of KitUp is to make adventure more accessible to people from all walks of life.

The Story of KitUp

Before founding KitUp, I was an Officer in the British Army and spent a lot of my time training soldiers in some remarkable places, from the deserts of Oman to winter training in the alps. Many of these men and women had never been exposed to such environments before and the biggest difficulty was convincing them to leave their games consoles for a week and come skiing! I found this bizarre, and after doing some digging I realised that for many, the thought of learning how to ski or climb a mountain was about as foreign as being asked to go on a trip into Space.

Two of the most significant barriers to adventure for people are:

A lack of access to outdoor equipment

Little outdoor education, particularly around using equipment safely

Much of the kit we use is bulky, incredibly expensive and not something to be bought on a whim. The rental options are limited and often of poor quality, or even as expensive as buying in the first place! With Kitup, this was the first thing we wanted to address. Secondly, even if one was to go out and spend a small fortune, what should they do with it? Unless you were brought up by the beach or walking through the hills, there is a high chance that you just wouldn’t know or wouldn’t feel confident without heavily investing in education and training.

When it comes to the outdoors, particularly for those exploring for the first time, knowing how to stay safe is key. There are lots of brilliant safety resources out there, but you have to know where to look.

The Cost Savings of Renting Equipment

In my garage, I have a couple of paddle boards, a mountain bike, a road bike and a few pairs of skis, poles and boots. As much as I would love for this kit to be used regularly, it’s not. I bought a new mountain bike in 2021, and if I am being very honest, this was entirely unnecessary and also tied me into a fixed debt for 2 years. Over that time it has been ridden a grand total of 14 days. When I calculated the cost per use I was astounded. For me to ‘get my money’s worth’ from this bike (instead of renting), I will need to ride it for 60 days (assuming an average day rental rate of £50 per day). At my current rate of use, this will take me over 8 years! Clearly, this does not take into account the maintenance, cleaning costs, transport costs etc. If this were to be included, it would be considerably more.

Renting that piece of expensive kit that is sadly languishing in the shed can be a great way of earning a little passive income, on top of providing an opportunity for use by someone else. Thankfully, rental seems to be catching on!

Getting the Most Out of Your Kit

2 weeks ago, an incredible thing happened. Another KitUp user rented my paddle boards for the weekend and that rental took me to the point that both boards had been used as often by other KitUp users this summer as they have by me. This not only makes me feel great, knowing that people have been able to go out and enjoy them, but those people have not had to buy and store boards (this is the most cited benefit of using KitUp!). This is so much more sustainable and is so easy to do.

Unlocking New Opportunities

Justine and her fluffy BFF Albie love paddle boarding and spend lots of time out on the river together. Justine’s friend was keen to join them, but had never paddled before and didn’t have a board herself. The team were able to find an additional board to borrow through KitUp, which provided the perfect opportunity for a SUP adventure at only a small cost.

Another example of KitUp coming to the rescue was for Kirsty, who loves taking part in competitive sporting events. She was given an entry into the London Triathlon but did not own an appropriate bike. She did not want to buy one as she did not intend on taking up cycling and didn’t have the space to store it in her flat. Through the KitUp app, she found Dani, another user that lived just minutes away. Kirsty rented the perfect bike for the weekend and proceeded to smash the event – great work!

Supporting Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives

Other than creating better access to equipment, there is another issue that we have to talk about and that is sustainability. For an industry that is entirely dependent on customers engaging with the environment, the outdoor industry has a terrible track record in this area. The majority of the equipment we use is of petrochemical construction (it comes from oil) and spends most of its life cycle not being used – more than 50% of paddle boards bought in the UK over the last 2 years have been used less than 5 times. This is remarkable. By increasing the usage of kit and by making more kit available, far less need be bought in the first place. This also incentivises people to buy better quality kit that will last longer as it can also be rented to others.

Pick up your phone and have a scroll, it won’t be long before you see one advertised in your feed. But they’re nothing new. As a lifelong hip-hop fan, I was introduced to the idea in 2003 when 50 Cent partnered with Reebok to release the G-Unit G6 trainer. And as popular as it was (think the Prime energy drink of my generation) it wasn’t revolutionary. The first hip-hop x trainer collaboration goes back to 1987 when adidas partnered with Run DMC.

Two decades later, I’m no longer a preteen, and there are few areas of our modern lives that collaborations haven’t breached. It’s arguably reached a point of absurdity. Footwear brands aren’t just collaborating with rappers – you can pick up a pair of Nike Dunks inspired by your favourite ice cream duo, Ben and Jerry.

Call me a cynic, but having worked in marketing for 10 years, it’s difficult for me to look beyond most collaborations for what they are – a way to increase a brand’s reach by appealing to another brand’s customers. Despite this, even I must admit that among the heaps of seemingly fanatical collaborations, some stand out and make sense – way more than ice cream-inspired trainers.

Klättermusen was keen to do a collaboration based on shared values of craftsmanship, heritage, and devotion to the environment

This is what Swedish mountain equipment brand Klättermusen were aiming for when they teamed up with renowned Sámi textile artist Britta Marakatt-Labba. As a brand that prides itself on creating the best and most sustainable equipment, Klättermusen was keen to do a collaboration based on shared values of craftsmanship, heritage, and devotion to the environment. Britta ticked all of those boxes.

Born into a Sámi reindeer herding family, Britta grew fond of Klättermusen after seeing reindeer herders using the clothing in challenging conditions.’When I was a child, my mother said, you have to be very careful with your clothes, they must last a long time, so I have a respect for the clothing.’

The Sámi are indigenous nomadic people who inhabit large parts of Scandinavia, including Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia with a total population across these countries estimated at around 80,000. Sámi culture is one of the oldest in Scandinavia, and is richly steeped in craftwork traditions and language. Culture undeniably influences everything that Britta does – if heritage was a value that Klättermusen were after, they certainly found that with this fascinating Sámi artisan.

‘I was so lucky to be raised by a family who loved to tell stories from our Sámi culture. My mother was very philosophical, and she used Sámi mythologies to teach us important lessons. We learned not to take more than we needed from the environment, and to give thanks. These stories were instilled in me, and in our culture, it all starts with art, so at a very young age, I started to tell stories through my art.’

In the summer, Britta would watch visitors making traditional Sámi handicrafts in their teepees and naturally gravitated towards textiles. ‘Cloth was always close to me as a child,’ she says.

In the decades since, Britta Marakatt-Labba has established herself as a renowned artist and founding member of the Máze Group, an art collective that sought to carve out a space for Sámi identity and culture as part of contemporary art. But this success didn’t come without challenge.

‘It was not so easy for one, young Sámi girl to go from the north of Sweden with my background and my culture and just to be there in Gothenburg,’ she explains. ‘Everything was so new for me. It’s the little London, you know? It was a culture shock – a new language, a new environment, and new behaviour.

‘In Sámi culture, we like to make jokes, and I was joking with people and singing all of the time. I met one girl, who said, have you been drinking? They didn’t understand me.’

Despite the feelings of alienation her heritage brought her, it remained a guiding compass in both her life and work.

‘I knew I wanted to make patterns for Klättermusen – the next question was, what shall I do?‘

Britta immediately turned to her Sámi heritage for inspiration, which offered a wealth of source material to tap into and explore. Throughout the range, you’ll find intricate designs which depict various aspects of cultural importance to the Sámi people. A ceremonial drum, forbidden and burned by Christians in the 16th century circles t-shirts and sweatshirts; women wearing horned hats upside-down in defiance of a ban on the headwear populate garments. You’ll see illustrations of plants used for medicine, nutrients, and even sweet treats. It’s apparent from the designs that nature is an exceptionally important part of Sámi culture, and arguably the most important message conveyed is the outcome when nature isn’t treated in the way that Britta’s mum taught her to through mythology.

I’ll admit, the designs are beautiful as they are, and I’d buy one based on the aesthetics alone. But as I chatted to Britta about the meaning of her embroidery, the garments took on a much deeper and more meaningful message than I anticipated.

‘I put these people with shadows and forests because a lot of things are happening in our home now,’ Britta explains. ‘They are taking more and more land from us – big mining companies are digging all of the time in search of new minerals and cutting down a lot of forests.’

Whilst running her finger across one of her garments, she explained the elements of the design.

‘The goddesses in the images are trying to protect the things that we need in our daily lives. You’ll see here that they have the horn-shaped hats in red hats because they are still happy. But some of them have black or blue – blue means sorrow in Sámi culture. They are wearing blue because they are very worried about what is happening.’

These include three in England, two in Wales and one in Scotland.

As it turns out, this alpine pastime has more than made its way onto UK soil in recent years, with offerings for adventurers with a head for heights to be found, with infinity bridges over gaping chasms, zip-lines in subterranean slate caverns and ladders scaling the side of a thundering waterfall, and some exciting interpretations of the original, historical format. While the UK may be lacking in altitude, it certainly has some thrills well worthy of note.

Many of the older European via ferratas are funded by local communities in order to attract tourism and they’re typically open to anyone to tackle without supervision. Via ferratas in the UK however are generally privately owned and maintained, which means you can’t do them without a guide. Most require booking in advance and using the centre’s own safety-tested equipment. Via ferrata excursions with a qualified guide can make for an excellent introduction to the activity, and many UK routes are suitable for beginners making it the perfect place to try your hand at via ferrata before venturing onto bigger terrain.

WHAT DOES VIA FERRATA MEAN?

Via ferrata is an Italian phrase that translates to Iron Path in English and is used to describe a series of metal cables, ladders and rungs or stemples which are fixed to a rock face in order to protect a climbing route. It is believed that these pathways have existed for centuries, used originally to connect villages in the Alps to high pastures, and later used by military personnel in World War I in locations such as the Italian Dolomites to transport equipment to strategic positions in the mountains. Latterly, these pathways were adopted by mountaineering clubs, who over the years added extra hardware in order to make them safer and more easily accessible. The term via ferrata is used across the world, except in German-speaking countries where the term klettersteig (climbing path) is more common.

IS VIA FERRATA SAFE?

Just like any activity in the mountains, via ferrata has inherent risks. Just how safe via ferrata is depends largely on using proper safety equipment, exercising caution and attention at all times and following the guidance of instructors. Of course, some risks simply cannot be eliminated, and rockfall and injuries sustained falling from the via ferrata itself are considered the two main risks associated with the activity.

Climbers scaling a via ferrata will use a harness and a specially-made safety setup involving a Y-shaped lanyard that is attached to the harness, with a carabiner on either end. The harness will typically be the same or very similar to a rock climbing harness and these should only ever be purchased from reputable brands or provided by the centre or instructor that is guiding you. The carabiners are used to secure the climber to the metal protection on the route as they move up. Passing fixed points (or transition posts) which are used to secure the metal rungs or cables to the rock, the climber will unclip one carabiner from the protective gear and into the next piece beyond the transition post before doing the same with the second carabiner. Used correctly, a via ferrata kit ensures that the climber is never not attached to the fixed metal gear, even when moving past a fixed or bolted point.

A proper via ferrata kit also includes a form of integrated braking device within the lanyard element. The reason for this is that it reduces the fall factor by absorbing the energy of the fall should it occur. Homemade or improvised via ferrata kits are NOT capable of doing this and will not protect a climber if they fall. Other essentials for a day on the iron path include a helmet, appropriate footwear such as approach shoes and gloves (sometimes specifically called ‘via ferrata gloves‘), either fingerless or not, and preferably with toughened palms to protect your hands from abrasions and the cold.

Outdoor centres and instructors offering via ferrata in the UK will help to equip you with all the necessary kit and guidance on how to use it properly.

How difficult is Via Ferrata?

In Europe, there are different classifications for via ferrata which indicate their difficulty. These vary from country to country and typically reflect the values used to grade climbing routes, taking into account elements such as technical difficulty, physical effort, exposure and environmental factors. The UIAA Mountaineering Commission adopted the Italian grading scale as the international standard in 2016 because of its completeness, though most via ferrata operators in the UK do not offer a grade for their routes, rather an indication of the required level of fitness and will be able to advise you of anything you need to be aware of. Whilst via ferratas in Europe can vary from the fun and beginner-friendly to the overhanging, sketchy and downright scary, commercially operated via ferrata in the UK are designed to be accessible to a broad range of people.

Simply, via ferrata involves a mixture of scrambling and climbing, but unlike traditional rock climbing, the route is marked by the metal rungs and cables that you will use to aid your ascent. These pieces of gear help you to negotiate tricky or otherwise impassible sections of rock, and whilst they make moving over the rock much easier, still require an element of strength and agility as well as a good head for heights. You will need to be confident enough to find a good, balanced stance and be dexterous enough to hold on with just one hand as you move your carabiners past the transition posts. Via ferrata typically only go one way, so you will need to be prepared to keep moving even if the butterflies kick in!

Weather can also play a part in how difficult a via ferrata might feel. Many of the UK’s sites operate year round, stopping play only in the event of dangerous conditions – keep an eye on the forecast and dress accordingly! Outdoor centres and operators will be able to offer guidance on how difficult their particular via ferrata route is, but ultimately it is up to you to assess your fitness levels and ability before you go.

Nowadays, Honister is home to the UK’s original via ferrata, the Classic, and also the Xtreme which opened in 2012. For both, participants need to be over 10 years old and above 1.3m tall, and whilst both routes take around 3 hours, they each have different things to offer.

Honister’s Classic route is suitable for most ages and abilities. Using the original miners’ track up the steep outer incline of Fleetwith Pike, following a continuous cable through the moody, grey landscape of the Honister Pass, taking in breathtaking views of the Lakeland landscape. Whilst neither require previous climbing experience, the Classic is a friendlier option than the Xtreme if you’re feeling a little jittery, and an excellent introductory path to the dizzy heights of via ferrata.

As the name perhaps suggests, the Xtreme requires a good level of fitness and includes more challenging terrain and exposure. Those with a hankering for the additional challenge of the Xtreme will find themselves tackling vertical ladder climbs, overhanging descent, a Burma bridge and sky ladder to finish – not for the faint hearted! Once completed there is a short scramble to the summit where you can catch your breath, overlooking Buttermere, Crummock and Loweswater, as well as Alfred Wainwright’s favourite fell, Haystacks.

Recently, Honister has updated their activity offering to include the longest highwire bridge in Europe and ‘the jump’, which can be combined with a via ferrata experience in a 3-4 hour Adrenaline Pass.

The unique, three hour course takes you through historic underground slate mines, combining elements of via ferrata with a staggering 13 zip lines as well as rope bridges, tightropes, and colourfully illuminated caves and tunnels. The course is open to anyone over 1.2m tall, but under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. It’s an all-weather activity (because it’s underground) and ideal for when the worst of the Welsh weather hits, although it can be a bit chilly down there, so be prepared with warm clothes.

Bikepacking has officially blown up! The simple act of packing up a push bike with the bare essentials and setting off for days on end has never been so popular – the ultimate antidote for two years of intermittent lockdowns perhaps. And as the gap between road and off-road bikes has blurred and we’ve learned ever-more creative ways to strap luggage directly onto our bikes, the possibilities for what’s possible with a backpacking rig and a basic camping set up is seemingly endless – something which has captured imaginations beyond the cycling world, including ourselves.

And a huge part of the beauty of setting off into the sunset on two wheels is the sense of liberty – the ability to easily craft your own journey or even travel without a set route in mind. But nailing a good route isn’t always as simple as it might seem and being able to simply plug in a GPX route masterfully and painstakingly designed by someone else is a fantastic way to maximise your fun on a multi-day bike trip. So what makes a good bikepacking route? Well to some extent that’s a subjective matter, and your own experience and fitness will play a role in what is or isn’t suitable. But for us, we love linear routes. A-to-B journeys are an incredible way to witness the landscape change beneath your tyres and the sense of achievement arriving somewhere far away is a tough one to beat. But it’s the miles in between that are the important bit. While you can bikepack on any type of bike and terrain, a good mix of both road and off road will allow you to really explore the landscape and perhaps get into those more isolated environments. Next, what’s the point? Well of course just riding your bike somewhere new is enough, but if there is historical or goegraphical or social context for the route’s existence, then even better. Finally, the route has to make sense, it needs to flow and feel like a cohesive journey.

So then begs the question, what are the UK’s best bikepacking routes? Well, while more and more seem to appear each and every month as more and more of the nation are bitten by the bikepacking bug, below we lay out our favourite multi-day bikepacking routes across the four corners of the UK.

Badger Divide

Heart of The Highlands

212 miles / 3-6 days

From Inverness in the north to Glasgow in the south, the Badger Divide is a fantastic option for discovering the Scottish Highlands by bike with a fraction of the commitment or technical riding prowess required to take on the iconic highland loops like the Highland Trail 550 or the Cairngorms Loop.

A play on the well known Baja Divide of the eponymous Mexican peninsula, the Badger Divide is an ideal and fairly accessible long weekend adventure linking up several well established existing trails.

With long winding gravel roads, forest tracks and back lanes as well as a touch of the chunkier stuff, you’ll want a capable trust-worthy gravel bike although you could certainly get away with something heavier duty (i.e. a mountain bike) if that’s what you have available to you.

Despite travelling through some pretty remote terrain, you’ll find plenty of resupply points as well as bothies, hostels and camp grounds to spend the night as well as of course an abundance of wild camping options. Being in the Scottish Highlands though, where weather can be notoriously savage, you’ll want to keep his one for the fairer summer months and probably still keep an eye on the forecast before you leave.

Finishing in Glasgow, the Badger Divide lends itself nicely to connect with Second City Divide for the ambitious ‘Double Divide’.

Second City Divide

Rough Stuff of The North

400 miles / 5-8 days

There are certainly faster, more efficient ways to cycle between these two cities, but you’ll struggle to find a more rewarding one. Snaking through vast wind farms, large open grassy moorland, rocky bridleways and tarmac roads, the Second City Divide makes for a fantastically varied and challenging journey between Glasgow and Manchester.

Along the route, you’ll take in some of most iconic landscapes of The North, from Kielder Forest to the Yorkshire Dales and beyond, including a cheeky traverse over the top of Cross Fell, the highest point of the Pennines.

It’s a route that has been carefully constructed over several years of map inspection and reconnaissance missions which clearly shows with a great sense of flow and some of the best all road riding in the UK.

But it’s not a route to be taken lightly. It’s challenging at times steep and rocky and isolated so it’s definitely one best suited to those with a bit of prior bikepacking experience, a bike that rides confidently off road and a good level of fitness. There are great transport links at both ends and at stages throughout which makes it logistically a lot simpler and meaning there is no reason why Second City Divide can’t be broken up into smaller weekend strike missions.

Old Chalk Way

The Neolithic Coast to Coast

357 miles / 4-7 days

Ok we might be slightly bias with this one as our very own BASE editor Chris was one half of the team to put it together, but what’s not to love?

The Old Chalk Way loosely follows England’s oldest road, an old trading link between South Coast and North Sea as a newly established route designed specifically for gravel bikes. The terrain here is mixed but not technical, with wide hard packed gravel, grassy byways and chalk double track and forest fire roads following a route steeped in history as it takes in some of the most important historical sites of the south of England.

There are train links close to the start and finish points as well as countless opportunities to bail out along the way which makes this a great opportunity to break up into smaller sections and its close proximity to London make it an ideal option for the weekend warrior without bags of time to commit to something longer.

While a gravel bike suits the non-technical mixed terrain, there’s no reason why you couldn’t ride a range of bikes here, from an allroad option with 35+mm tyres to a mountain bike with far more rubber.

Bridleways, Cream-Teas and Birdwatching

115 mile / 2-4 days

The only loop in this roundup, the East Devon Trail is a fantastic new bikepacking offering from Katherine Moore with a focus on local wildlife.

This is a hilly and often overlooked part of Devon. Connecting bridleways and forest tracks around this Area of Natural Beauty you’ll want some tyres with a bit of grip to see you through but as with all of these anything on the spectrum between gravel bike and mountain bike will do just fine.

With wildlife viewing a central focus, riders are encouraged to pack their binoculars for the journey as the route passes by several nature reserves and bird hides along the way.

Conveniently reaching over the border in Dorset, the East Devon Trail makes the ideal linking route to the Old Chalk Way for those riding from Exeter or just looking to extend their ride.

Trans Cambrian Way

The Heart of Mid-Wales

100 miles / 2-4 days

Often overlooked by the national park status of the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia, the Cambrian mountains of Mid Wales are the focal point of some of the most remote landscapes in the UK.

Heading west out of the Welsh border market town of Knighton, unsurprisingly there’s a fair bit of climbing to be done across the Trans Cambrian Way heading to the mouth of the river Dyfi on the Irish Sea.

Expect singletrack forest trails, quiet lanes, reservoirs, bothies, river crossings and epic night skies. A mountain bike is likely to be the best tool for the job here, but a sturdy gravel bike with an acceptance regarding hike-a-bike will do just fine.

As much of this route travels through pretty remote landscapes you’ll need to be strategic with your resupply points making sure to make the most of shops, pubs and cafes when the opportunity arises.

At 950m at its highest point, Helvellyn is the third highest peak in both England and the Lake District. Helvellyn’s height is surpassed only by the aforementioned Scafell Pike at 978m and its sister peak, Scafell, at 964m. Helvellyn is a significantly more accessible peak comparatively, though its terrain is challenging enough to get your heart pumping and your thighs burning – you’ll feel like you’ve really earned that pint of Wainwright by the end of the day.

Hiking Helvellyn can be done via a number of different routes, some steeper than others, though none are to be taken lightly. Approaches typically start from the village of Glenridding on the shore of Ullswater, or from Thirlmere. The latter is thought to be the less picturesque route up, but is still worthwhile and a far gentler incline for those less partial to an uphill slog! Incorporating one or both of possibly the Lake District’s most famous ridges, Striding Edge and Swirral Edge, is also an option for those comfortable with exposure and scrambling (more on this later), and a sandwich stop by Red Tarn is a must.

Helvellyn’s appeal isn’t solely the reserve of the rambler, or even the fell runner, the peak is also a firm favourite with the bolder mountain biker, offering hike-a-bike trails and hair-raising downhills. A photographer’s paradise too, a sunrise ascent will often provide exceptional views of Ullswater, cloud inversions and breathtaking lightplay on the mountain’s craggy features (it’s also an excellent way to dodge the crowds).

Helvellyn is around 450 million years old and is part of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group. No, that’s not a club for lava-lovers, but rather a group of rock formations created by a major volcanic eruption. Glacial movement during the last ice age (over 20,000 years ago) then carved Helvellyn’s most notable features, including the two prominent ridge lines leading to its summit, Striding Edge and Swirral Edge.

It’s likely that Helvellyn’s name derives from the old Cumbric language, which was widely spoken in Northern England and Lowland Scotland up until the 12th century. It’s believed that the mountain’s name loosely translates to ‘yellow moorland’, a combination of two Cumbric words; hal, meaning moorland and velin, which means yellow. This name is likely to have been coined by shepherds of the time, who would assess the quality of grazing land for their herds based on the appearance of the grass. Owing to its elevation, snow on Helvellyn will often linger into the late spring, and the grass that grows beneath it takes on a yellow shade.

Helvellyn’s history is pretty colourful and there are a few interesting markers of significant events to look out for. Famed as the first mountain summit in Britain to host a plane landing, and the setting for a tragically true story of a perished painter whose body was guarded by his faithful terrier Foxie, monuments to both events can be found by walkers with a keen eye.

Less subtle is the cross-shaped, stone summit shelter which was built by volunteers around 60 years ago. The shape of the shelter means that walkers can take refuge in any wind direction, and it is a much-used bolthole for sandwich-eating on sunny days and survival when conditions change rapidly.

Helvellyn is also the subject of numerous works of poetry, painting and literature and more recently featured in the BBC documentary film series Life Of A Mountain.

Choosing the most suitable route for you and your party is the first step in making sure everyone summits safely, and it’s important to remember that conditions ‘on the ground’ are very unlikely to match up to those on the tops. It takes an awful lot of rain to keep those lakes full you know, and you’re unlikely to catch a Cumbrian without a cagoule close to hand. Is it a glorious, warm, sunny day on lower ground? Depending on windspeed and direction and owing to its elevation, there’s a really good chance you’ll be feeling the chill up high. The weather on Helvellyn is notoriously changeable – pack your rucksack accordingly!

On the subject of weather, to get the most accurate idea of how things will feel once you’re up there, take a look at the Mountain Weather Information Service forecast and Lake District Weatherline, which are both freely accessible online. The latter is run by the Fell Top Assessors team, Jon Bennett, Zac Poulton and Wes Hunter. Every day through December – March, one of these guys makes their way up the mountain to check conditions, take photos and supply a report to add to the Met Office weather forecast. As winter mountaineering aficionados, it’s safe to say they know their stuff.

There are no bins or toilets on Helvellyn – or on pretty much any mountain, anywhere, for that matter –so be prepared to carry anything you carry up with you back down again. ‘Go’ before you go (you know what I mean!), don’t start fires or have barbecues and leave that aura of romance that Wainwright was talking about in tact for the next people to enjoy.

Amble or scramble?

Striding Edge and Swirral Edge scramble

This route covers 8.11 miles in distance and 2,575 feet of elevation and should take around 5 hours depending on your pace. These two knife-edge ridge lines are a spectacular way to ascend Helvellyn, you can incorporate one or both of them into your route, though forethought is advised. In a previous life, working at a busy Lake District youth hostel, I was often asked by first-time guests:

‘Is Striding Edge safe?’

Whether or not any mountain route is safe is very much subjective to you. Striding Edge is a notorious spot for slips and trips, often resulting in Mountain Rescue call-outs and occasionally in fatalities, but with a little caution and planning, can be an awesome addition to a big day in the hills for surefooted fell walkers.

Both of Helvellyn’s ridges require a degree of scrambling. So what exactly is scrambling? Bridging the gap between walking and climbing, scrambling involves using both your hands and feet, down-climbing and negotiating steep sections of rock. Taking on Striding and Swirral Edge means traversing boulders and narrow walkways with a sheer drop at either side that will give even those with a strong head for heights (myself included) a touch of butterflies.

So, assess your ability, and play to the conditions. The ridges become slippery when wet, and strong winds can easily knock you off balance. Appropriate footwear is essential, and bear in mind that queues can form on Striding Edge as people negotiate the infamous ‘bad step’. It’s tricky and potentially dangerous to others to attempt to reverse, so make sure you’re sure before you commit!

Both Striding and Swirral Edge are Grade I scrambles and are very simple to navigate – if you’re not following people, you’ll be following the line of polished rock. Striding Edge is renowned for being one of the UK’s best of its grade. In good, dry conditions, both lines are technically suitable for a beginner scrambler and are a really exciting addition to your ascent if you are feeling confident and capable. Swirral Edge is arguably a little more easy-going, and is often taken as the second ridge in a horseshoe route.

The quickest route up Helvellyn involves around 2.3 miles of trail, 2,475 feet of elevation, and is manageable in 3 hours, again depending on your pace. If you don’t have a head for heights, this alternative approach to the summit climbs a pleasant but stony track from the mountain’s west side at the southern end of Thirlmere. Following Helvellyn Gill offers plenty of toe-dipping opportunities along the way and means that you can give the ridges a miss and still enjoy a day in the fells that will certainly earn you an ice cream. To return, simply retrace your steps.

There are options to make this into a circular hike too, descending via Wythburn’s zig-zag path will add an extra few hours to your day but is much gentler on the knees!

Spring and summer offer fairer temperatures and longer daylight hours for the everyday adventurer, but in the depths of winter, experienced mountaineers and climbers can take on some of the mountain’s gullies and ridges and there are around nine ski runs up to a mile in length.

Even the most benign-looking frost can render steep ridge lines totally treacherous and temperatures typically decrease by around 1˚C per 100m of ascent

Tackling Helvellyn in the colder months requires a good winter skillset, and should only be attempted by experienced skiers and winter walkers, equipped with winter boots, ice axes and crampons.
Well, probably not the whole way! Most of Helvellyn’s MTB routes involve sections of hike-a-bike, that is, pushing or shouldering your steed and carrying it uphill.

Helvellyn has the honour of featuring one of England’s highest bridleways, and experienced bikers can enjoy testing climbs up steep switchbacks and rough, rugged and gnarly downhills covering sections of the mountain such as Sticks Pass, Dolywagon Pike and Grizedale. Helvellyn is widely regarded as having some of the best riding the Lakes has to offer, though it isn’t a beginner’s venue. Competent riders can take the pressure off by booking a guide who can assist with navigation, preparation and proper bike setup for Helvellyn’s very specific terrain.

As with walking, there are approaches to the summit from both the east and west sides of Helvellyn, but for an truly otherworldly experience, head for the east-facing trails in the early hours for a chance to catch the sunrise and awe-inspiring cloud inversions, then descend in the glow of golden hour.

Scotland’s Most Iconic Long Distance Trail

96 miles / 6-8 days

From the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William in the heart of the Highlands, the rugged West Highland Way is not only Scotland’s first long distance trail but also arguably its most iconic.

96 miles long, the route explores some of Scotland’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. From the tranquil water side trails of Loch Lomond, through ancient woodland, along crystal clear rivers, lonely moorland, serene glens and epic towering mountains. These lands are rich with wildlife, including golden eagles, peregrine falcons, wild goats, and red deer.

The Scottish Highlands are home to the biggest, wildest landscapes on the British Isles so what better way to experience them than by hiking right its epicentre? You’ll also have the opportunity to sleep in some of the finest wild-camping spots too.

Most people opt to walk the route from south to north, but it could be done in either direction. In 2017 Rob Sinclair completed the West Highland Way in an impressive 13 hours 41 mins setting the fastest known time on the route. To really enjoy this route though you’ll want to take your time, with most people hikers finishing the route in six to eight days.

Travelling 112 miles from the National Trust coastline of Wembury, across the heart of Devon – England’s largest county – through Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks to finish on the high cliffs of Lynton on Devon’s untamed north coast.

The Cotswold Way

History, Tradition and Beauty

103 miles /6-8 days

Quintessentially English, The Cotswold Way cuts a line through the stunning countryside, magical woodlands and ancient villages of one of England’s most picturesque regions.

Starting in the classic market town of Chipping Campden. The route passes through ancient commons in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Neolithic burial barrows, and historic battle sites with ever-changing views across rolling countryside towards the River Severn and the Malvern Hills. The trail finishes 103 miles later in the World Heritage City of Bath with a plethora of iconic Roman historical sites.

The most easily accessible of the trails in this list, The Cotswold Way is very well marked making following the route pretty straight forward. It’s also far less isolated than some of the others meaning anyone who is reasonably fit can take it on.

England’s Ultimate Long Distance Trail

280 miles / 15-20 days

Following the spine of England, The Pennine Way is an epic long-distance trail that explores the wildest and most spectacular scenery the country has to offer.

More than just a means to walk a long way, as the first of England’s National Trails, the Pennine Way is a route of upmost historical significance, paving the way for public access to some of England’s wildest landscapes, exploring a region famed for harsh weather conditions and isolated hill tops.

From the Peak District, the Pennine Way follows England’s rocky spine through the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines and over Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland to the Cheviot Hills –which on a good day will provide views reaching as far as Edinburgh – ending in the Scottish Borders in Kirk Yetholm.

The Emerald Spine of South Wales

99 miles / 7-10 days

Crossing the three major ranges that make up the Brecon Beacons National Park, this route is known for its big open spaces, and epic night skies.

Starting in Abergavenny, the Brecons Way travels east to west almost 100 miles across some of the UK’s wildest and most remote landscapes ending in the village of Llangadog.

On the Brecons Way, you’ll experience a huge diversity of landscapes, passing historical villages, castles and canals as well as summits with far reaching views, vast moorland and stunning waterfalls and serene reservoirs. You’ll also be travelling above large and complex cave systems including the deepest in the UK and longest in Wales.

This is a particularly good route for spotting birds of prey with red kites, buzzards, kestrels, peregrine falcons all likely to be spotted overhead.

The South West Coast Path

The UK’s Longest Trail

631 miles / 49-56 days

There’s no better way to discover the epic coastlines of Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Dorset than by hiking the South West Coast Path (SWCP).

Although this path follows the coast the entire way, you can expect massively varied landscapes, from huge cliffs, to sheltered pebbled coves, long white sand beaches to tiny fishing villages.

There’s a huge amount of history along the SWCP too with its origins as a coastguard patrol trail to counter smuggling. Today it winds through a number of areas of particular interest, including several National Nature Reserves and Heritage Coasts, five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, two World Heritage Sites, a UNESCO designated Biosphere reserve and a Geopark and one National Park.

Unless you’ve got a really solid block of time available or perhaps are trying to bag an FKT, this one is probably best broken up and with easy access from towns and villages along the way, how you choose to approach this hiking path is totally up to you.
