Weight 254g (size UK 5.5)
Features Lightweight, waterproof, great grip

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Waterproof
  • Great grip

Cons

  • No ankle support, often thought to be essential when hiking.
  • Sole is sufficient but could be more comfortable if there was more padding, especially when terrain is rocky.

WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR

A stable hiking shoe that can handle uneven terrain, especially loose gravel. I live in the Alps therefore need a shoe that I can hike in from May through to November, with different temperatures and conditions.  Hikes can be multi-day so comfort is key.  For me the biggest priority was to find a shoe that has sufficient tread to grip the ground even when the terrain is uneven and/or loose.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

DYNAMIC!  I love the colour and instantly I could see the tread was good plus it’s lightweight. It looks like a shoe you’re going to have fun adventures exploring the mountains in!

the shoe stands out as a fun, adventure shoe

THE TEST

I tested the adidas TERREX Agravic 3 trail running shoes on hikes in Chamonix Mont Blanc as well as coastal walks in Ibiza. I also tested the shoe as a trail running shoe.

I was keen to see if it could provide support I need. For downhill hiking it is especially important for me as I have a knee issue, so I need the footwear to be stable.

The hikes were long to test how comfortable the shoes are and I crossed streams and boggy areas to test how waterproof. This is vital for a mountain shoe – often there is significant ground water when the snow is melting and many mountain streams.

Conditions of the hikes were mainly dry however some runs I did were in the rain so there was a real mix of test conditions.

WHO IS THIS ITEM FOR?

Someone like me! I live in Chamonix therefore do a lot of hiking on the trail during the summer and shoulder seasons so I need a shoe that is versatile and can provide stability in different conditions.

WHAT STANDS OUT?

DESIGN

‘The thickness of the foam construction gives a sense of increased safety.’

LIGHTWEIGHT

Their lightweight property stands out. It perhaps seems like they won’t provide enough support and stability given how light they are but that’s not the case. It makes packing them and taking them on trips really easy too – they easily squash into a cabin bag.

STYLE

Their colour and design are fun and the shoe stands out as a fun, adventure shoe.

VALUE FOR MONEY

Good. I think £100 is expected for a technical shoe. Perhaps they’re even on the cheaper side…

BASE BOTTOM LINE

Overall, the adidas TERREX Agravic 3 is a great trail running shoe.  Usually waterproof shoes can feel hot in the summer but this shoe is perfect.  And a great hiking shoe – packs easily into bags, provides solid support and stability and for me, was a real winner regarding the tread and grip.  I prefer hiking in a shoe as opposed to a boot however my only concern would be for some more technical routes perhaps I would feel happier knowing I had ankle support.  However I would always prefer using this shoe as it is not cumbersome, instead dynamic, comfortable, lightweight and supportive.

I really enjoyed testing this shoe as a trail running shoe as often, I run during a hike so to test its versatility was important.  It’s great to know this shoe has enough flexibility for running too.

I would recommend this shoe for hiking as long as that person did not need ankle support.  For me it’s great!
