WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR

I was looking for something just as capable as my hiking boots, but lighter and with serious protection against the wet, all of which the adidas Terrex Trailmaker 2.0 promised. My boots were starting to get a bit old, and, after a hike that turned into a scramble, I wanted something more versatile. A lower cut for more ankle movement and lightweight for longer and more adventurous hikes would make for a good all-rounder I thought. As the days begin to shorten, sloppy walks are going to be the norm so, additional water protection won’t go amiss. I’d much rather have solid equipment than swap out the hobbies that make me happy and adidas appear to have read my wish list.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

As soon as I got the adidas Trailmaker 2.0 out the box I was impressed by the look of them. They have a similar sleek profile to my Terrex trail running shoes but with a bit more bulk to inspire some hiking confidence. I like the colours, interesting without being garish. There is more than one option so if purple isn’t for you, there’s no need to write this shoe off. The Continental sole, now a standard in the Terrex range, looked like I could trust the when things got slippy underfoot.

THE TEST

After a steady few days of rain, I decided to take the adidas Terrex Trailmakers on a hike in Leigh Woods, Bristol that was guaranteed to be slick and steep. This forest is a known walking spot, but I planned to head onto the lesser-known single track trails.

I deliberately picked my way up and down the more technical trails. They were littered with wet leaves, hiding slick clay beneath. It’s enough to make anyone cautious, and in new shoes I picked my way down gently. As I progressed, not a slip to be had and the sole dealt with the leaves and mud incredibly well. I could feel it bite as I put my feet down which gave me the confidence to pick up the pace.

The lightness and low cut of the shoes was also a welcome departure from my usual boot. The shoes made me feel agile, able to move my ankles freely and I appreciated that on the rockier parts of my walk. When I inevitably hit some puddles, I opted to plough through to test the Gore-Tex upper. I was pleased with the result. While they didn’t survive a full dunking (which you shouldn’t expect them to) they were able to withstand a lot of wet mud and puddles without getting my feet wet.

WHO IS THIS ITEM FOR?

If you are looking for one hiking shoe that can cover a lot of bases the Adidas Terrex Trailmaker 2.0 is the shoe for you. It’s light, the sole is confidence-inspiring on challenging terrain and they hold up well in the wet.

WHAT STANDS OUT?

GORE-TEX

Having protection against water is a must-have for winter walks.

SOLE

Really good at biting into mud but doesn’t feel unstable on rock either.

DESIGN

The trainer-esque look of the shoe means they still look good even when your hike is over.

LACES

The laces are quite stiff so getting the tension right for a long hike can feel quite fiddly

VALUE FOR MONEY

For the features, and performance I would rate this as a reasonably-priced hiking shoe.

BASE BOTTOM LINE

All in all I was really happy with the adidas Trailmaker 2.0. It was a comfortable shoe that performed well on technical terrain. The shoe didn’t take any time at all to break in and I was pretty pleased with them from the first walk. The only niggle I have is how fiddly it is to get the laces tensioned further down the tongue, but I would expect that to loosen with time. The sole grip was confidence inspiring and they looked as good in the pub post walk as they did out on the trails. If you just want one pair of shoes for walking, I’d say this is a strong all-rounder.
