Zofia Reych is the founder of the Women’s Bouldering Festival in Fontainebleau and author of Born to Climb: From Rock Climbing Pioneers to Olympic Athletes. Climbing is a driving force in their life — but for a long time, it also seemed to be a destructive one. After receiving diagnoses for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and being forced to limit climbing during the pandemic lockdowns, Zof discovered that perhaps the best way for them to improve their climbing was to temporarily let it go.

There’s a lot to think about when it comes to any genre of photography, but throw in a heart-pumping location, lung-busting effort, speed, motion, wild weather and challenging light conditions and it’s easy to see why adventure photography is a completely different beast! As more extreme weather events become the norm, the impacts on communities across the globe and how they adapt to cope are a critical part of every day life. Between November 2021 and February 2022 the UK saw a series of storms, the power of which had not been seen since the Great Storm of 1987.

Whole towns and villages were cut off from power, heating, running water and mobile phone reception. Further to the immediate impact on lives, an estimated 16 million trees were blown over blocking roads, flattening forestry plantations and destroying vehicles.

Will Bosi was one of the UK’s very best male competitive Sport Climbing athletes. In 2018, Will became the first British male athlete to make a Lead Climbing final in nearly 30 years and in 2020, he just missed out on a spot at the Tokyo Olympics.

Competing at the highest level however came at a price, and Will made the difficult decision to step away from the limelight of competition climbing to pursue a career outside.

The film features Will’s journey to Czech Republic to explore the Moravsky Kras region under tutelage from icon Adam Ondra, through to Will’s ascent of the hardest Sport Climbing route in Scotland, ‘Free at Last’ 9a+. This ascent marked a key milestone in Will’s journey from the pressures of competition to creating his own path and finding his identity outdoors.

An international not-for-profit organisation, Ascend was created in order to empower young women through mountaineering-based leadership training and community service. Having founded originally in Afghanistan, it was its programs with Afghan women that first gained momentum as well as global recognition.

For Mina Bakhshi, Haniya Tavasoli and Rabia Hussai, joining Ascend, gave them the chance to test their personal and cultural limits and explore the mountains of their home country. In August 2021, when the country fell to the Taliban, Ascend became their one chance to escape a regime that would restrict their freedoms and future.

While the women of Ascend were being resettled in other countries with volunteer host families from Ascend’s network – often other climbers wanting to help – Merryn Venugopal and Michelle Pellette, two members of Yosemite Search and Rescue, were also looking to find ways to support fellow climbers in need. They invited the women to spend a week in Yosemite, where they could safely reunite and find solace in the climbing community.

Now, as they build new lives in a country separated from their families, the women find that connecting with other climbers in Yosemite is also a connection to home.

There are few better means through which to explore a landscape than by bike, and with its dramatic remote landscapes and ancient tribal past, Scotland makes for some incredible bikepacking opportunities.

In the Early Middle Ages, in a pre-Viking era, a tribal confederation of Celtic people called the Picts ruled eastern and northern Scotland. Today, in the form of their iconic stone carvings, their stamp on the landscape remains.

Inspired originally by a photograph of a specific but unknown gravel road in the Highlands, over the past couple of years, Annie Evans and Huw Oliver pieced together a new bikepacking route through the ancient Pictish kingdoms, from the far-north reaches of the UK in Caithness, down to Edinburgh. This is the story of them piecing together that route, as well as their first journey along what has become Scotland’s newest bikepacking route – The Pictish Trail.
